Famous for its medieval towers that dominate the landscape, San Gimignano is an unmissable destination for those who want to immerse themselves in the history and culture of the region. About 30 km from Borgo Villa Certano, this picturesque village offers a unique experience of art, architecture and breathtaking landscapes.

The History of San Gimignano

San Gimignano has origins that date back to the Etruscan era, but the town reached its peak splendor during the Middle Ages. The town became an important commercial center thanks to its strategic position along the Via Francigena, the main pilgrimage route that connected Rome to Canterbury. During this period, many noble families built imposing towers as a symbol of their power and wealth. Today, 14 of these towers survive, giving San Gimignano the nickname “Manhattan of the Middle Ages.”
